Gym Photos Without the Mirror Selfie
Effort without a mirror selfie.

The gym mirror selfie is the most-mocked photo on dating apps, and fitness isn't the reason. The phone in the frame is. A mirror selfie tells the viewer you photographed yourself, alone, on purpose, which undoes the casual impression every other photo in the set is building.
Shot as a photo rather than a selfie, the same setting keeps the signal and loses the tell. Between sets, breathing hard, clothed, nowhere near a mirror.
What to wear
- Worn kit rather than new kit, since the point is that you were already there
- A t-shirt rather than a vest, unless a vest is what you genuinely train in
- One fitted layer, because the shape is the information and a baggy hoodie throws it away
When to shoot it, and the light
Mid-session, when you are actually flushed. Gyms run on overhead strip lighting, which is unflattering from directly above, so stand near a window or an angled light rather than under a fixture.
The mistake that ruins this shot
Mirrors of any kind in frame, and a background of empty equipment. A busy gym with people out of focus behind you reads as real. An empty one at 6am reads as arranged.
Where it goes in your profile
One only, and not first. A single gym photo is a data point. Three become a personality, and rarely the intended one.
