Summit and Lookout Photos: Landscape Behind, Real Pride in Front
Landscape behind, genuine pride.
A trail photo says you go outside. A lookout photo says you got somewhere. The expression carries it: genuine, slightly out-of-breath satisfaction is very hard to fake and instantly readable when it's real.
Treat the landscape as the second subject. Plenty of summit photos are beautiful pictures of a valley containing a small unidentifiable person, which is useless on a dating app.
What to wear
- Outdoor kit that has clearly been used, with the pack still on
- A bright shell or mid-layer, since you are against a huge muted background and need to separate from it
- Sunglasses pushed up onto the head rather than over the eyes
When to shoot it, and the light
Morning, while valleys still hold haze and the light comes in low across the landscape. Midday on a summit is flat and hazy, and it washes the background out.
The mistake that ruins this shot
Standing so far back that you become a coloured dot. Get the camera close: you fill about a third of the frame, the view fills the rest.
Where it goes in your profile
Second or third if the photo is a good one. It is among the highest-performing outdoor shots there is.
