At-Home Photos That Look Unguarded Rather Than Lazy
Morning light, unguarded.
Every other photo in a profile shows a version of you dressed for the outside world. One photo at home, in morning light, with a coffee, suggests what being around you is actually like, and that is the question people are really asking.
The line between unguarded and unbothered is thin, and light is what separates them. The same room shot at 9am and at 9pm gives two completely different impressions.
What to wear
- What you'd actually wear on a Sunday, one notch tidier
- Soft textures such as a knit or a good sweatshirt, which is what makes at-home photos feel warm
- Nothing you would wear out, which breaks the premise straight away
When to shoot it, and the light
Morning, curtains open, every lamp off. Daylight through a window at a low angle across a sofa is the entire shot. The same room under overhead lighting at night will look grim.
The mistake that ruins this shot
A tidied, styled, cushion-fluffed room. It should look like somewhere a person lives. Check the background too, for anything you would rather a stranger didn't zoom in on.
Where it goes in your profile
Fifth or later. It signals intimacy, and it works best once the viewer has already decided they're interested.
