City Street Photos That Work as a First Profile Picture
Clear face, natural daylight.
Your first photo has one job, which is to show your face clearly enough that someone can decide in half a second. A city sidewalk in daylight does that with no group, no sunglasses and no ambiguity about which person you are.
It is also the least try-hard setting on this list. A street photo suggests someone who was out and got photographed, which is the impression the whole profile wants to give.
What to wear
- A jacket with structure. A defined shoulder line reads well against a busy background
- Mid-tone colours. The background is grey concrete, and black-on-grey loses your outline
- Shoes that match the formality of the jacket, since this is usually a three-quarter or full-body shot
When to shoot it, and the light
Overcast days beat sunny ones here. Direct midday sun on an open street gives you hard shadows under the eyes and a squint. Flat cloud light is even and forgiving.
The mistake that ruins this shot
A background that's busy at head height. Signage, scaffolding and parked cars directly behind you all compete with your face. Look for depth instead: a street receding behind you throws the background out of focus.
