Social proof without a group photo.
Group photos are a trap. They signal a social life, but they force the viewer to work out which one you are, and most people won't bother. A rooftop bar shot carries the same signal, evening light and somewhere worth being, with exactly one person in focus.
The city behind you does the rest. Depth and out-of-focus lights behind a subject is the most recognisable good-photo look there is, and at height after dark it happens by itself.
What to wear
- A fitted button-down or a fine-gauge knit with the sleeves pushed up
- One considered detail such as a watch or a decent jacket. This is the setting where effort reads as normal rather than as trying
- Nothing with a loud logo, which cheapens the setting immediately
When to shoot it, and the light
Blue hour, meaning the 20 to 30 minutes after sunset when the sky is still deep blue and the city lights are on. Full dark leaves you with either flash on the face or a background of nothing.
The mistake that ruins this shot
Holding the drink up toward the camera. It puts a glass between you and the viewer and reads like a bottle-service stock photo. Let it sit on the rail or hang at your side.
Where it goes in your profile
Third or fourth. It is an atmosphere shot, so it needs a clear face photo earlier in the set to anchor it.
